Utz-Neely House. This Western bungalow was built by the noted New Albany contracting firm of Stephen Day and Sons. It is located at the west end of the National Register-listed Shelby Place Historic District, overlooking the picturesque neighborhood with its landscaped esplanade.
This half-block of 15
th Street features a row of five Day-built homes, constructed between 1908 and 1922 in a range of styles. The Day Lumber Company was located immediately to the south, until it was destroyed by fire in April 1977.
Lenora Stafford purchased this new house in June 1921 from Mary F. Day – niece of Stephen Day – but lived here less than a year before selling it to Clarence and Esther Utz in August 1922. Mr. Utz was a clerk for the Railway Mail Service.
Collis Neely, a self-employed printer, purchased the house from the Utz family in May 1936 when the Utzes moved to Glenwood Court.
