Built 1898. Shotgun. The Johnson-Mottweiler House. The first resident of this house appears to be Thomas H. Johnson. He was an assistant custodian at the U.S. Government & Post Office Building located at the southwest corner of Pearl and Spring Streets in Downtown New Albany. After almost seven years of residency by the Johnson family, the house then saw numerous occupants until George E. Mottweiler moved his family into the home by 1916. Mr. Mottweiler’s occupation was listed in the New Albany City Directory as a trackman.

In the early 1930s and for about ten years, the house again saw several different residents.

During the 1940s, Kelso and Ruby Miller resided in the home, and the 1950s saw Strause and Darlene Cunningham occupying the structure. The Cunninghams lived here until the early 1960s, when they moved to 1743 Shelby Street. Mr. Cunningham was a machine operator at General Electric in Louisville.

Carl and Wanda Meadors were the next long-term residents of the property, beginning in the mid 1960s. Mr. Meadors was a finisher for the Bass Furniture Company in Louisville. He died in the mid 1970s and Mrs. Meadors remained in the home through the late 1970s.

Strause and Darlene’s daughter, Mary Cunningham, began occupancy in the house around 1980 that lasted until the late 1990s.
