Johantgan-Stiller-Dooley House
1901 East Elm Street
New Albany, IN 47150
Sheriff Sale

Listing Description:
Isaac and Maud Johantgan purchased this lot in October 1905 for $540. Local folklore tells that the house was moved from another neighborhood site sometime in 1906. The first entry for this address appears in the 1907 New Albany City Directory and lists Mr. Johantgan as being a telephone operator.

The Johantgans sold the property in May 1925 to Ulyses and Alice Stephens, and in less than two years, the house was sold to Sallie Turley, widow of J. P. Turley. In the late 1940s, Mrs. Turley’s daughter and son-in-law, Lula and Walter Mathes, came to live in the home. Sallie died in January 1953 and the Mathes’ remained until May 1957, ending almost 30 years of occupancy by the Turley-Mathes family.

Chester and Bonnie Stiller purchased the house from the Mathes’ and lived here for ten years. Mr. Stiller was an employee of the old Hoosier Panel Co., located on Silver Street in New Albany. Hoosier Panel was one of the many wood-working companies that made New Albany the largest producer of plywood and veneer in the world. The paneling found in several of the rooms in this house came from Hoosier Panel.

In 1967, Mrs. Stiller’s sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Kenneth Dooley, purchased the home and remained until their deaths. Mr. Dooley passed away in 1990 and Mrs. Dooley in 2009, ending over 50 years of occupancy by the Stiller-Dooley families. Kenneth was a retiree from Jeff Boat and Ruth retired from ICI, also known as the “bag plant,” in Charlestown, Indiana.

The property's judgment number is 22-CO1-1708-MF-001204. With this number you can visit the Clerk's Office in the City-County building and enter it into their computers to find the judgment owed on the property. This is public record.
