John Robert Alexander House
1743 Shelby Street
New Albany, IN 47150
Sheriff Sale

Listing Description:

Built 1885. Gabled-ell. The John Robert Alexander House. John Alexander and his wife Annie purchased this lot in April 1884 for $325. The house was constructed by the time the 1886 New Albany City Directory was published and lists Mr. Alexander’s occupation as a laborer at the New Albany Woolen Mill.

The New Albany Woolen Mill was located where the present-day New Albany High School stands, just a few blocks from the Alexander home. The mill was founded in 1864 and the new building on Vincennes Street was completed in 1866. The company also sponsored the New Albany Woolen Mill Band that performed for many dignitaries around the state, including Governor Baker in 1871. The mill ceased operation about 1910. By August 1915, the Hercules Motor Company had purchased the Woolen Mill property and began manufacturing automobiles in New Albany. This business was short-lived, as the Great Cyclone of 1917 completely destroyed the factory.

In later years John worked for florist Andres Rasmussen, which again was located within walking distance from the house. Towards the end of his working career John was listed as being a plumber.  The home stayed in the Alexander family for over forty years until the deaths of Mr. And Mrs. Alexander in the mid 1920s.

Over the next forty years, the home saw numerous occupants until the early 1960s, when the Strause M. Cunningham family began a long tenure of residency here.

The property’s judgment number is 22C01-0804-MF-226. With this number you can visit the Clerk's Office in the City-County building and enter it into their computers to find the judgment owed on the property. This is public record.
